Pattern Mix Latest Book by Pattern People

Happy to share images of Pattern Mix, the latest book published by Portland based print studio Pattern People. The book showcases a selection of prints by designers from all over the world, including some of my latest patterns.
As the Pattern People team says "...this compendium of patterns captures a range of styles including whimsical conversationals, bold geometrics, and sophisticated florals. Whether you’re searching for a print designer to help you launch a collection, looking for new techniques, or just in need of some visual candy, Pattern Mix will inspire print lovers of all ages".
Above I share a few images of some of the fabulous patterns featured in the book by designers like Oscar Velásquez, fellow Modern Yardage designer Gill Eggleston, Megan McNeill and Irina Radtke.

El libro muestra una selección de prints por diseñadores de todo el mundo, incluyendo algunos de mis más recientes estampados. Lovely feature today on Uppercase

Some of the works I sent to them are new and haven't been seen before by the public, I can't wait to see the publication to be released in early April. Hurra, buenísimas noticias! He sido incluida en la publicación especial de la revista Uppercase dedicada al diseño de superficies! Super contenta de aparecer en una de mis revistas de diseño preferidas. Muchos de los trabajos que envié a la publicación son completamente nuevos y no han sido vistos antes por el público, no me aguanto por ver la publicación a ser lanzada a principios de abril. Ha sido en verdad un esfuerzo de muchos años el llegar hasta este punto. Han sido infinidad de veces que me he cuestionado si vale la pena seguir adelante pues esta es una industria muy competida y publicaciones como ésta son de verdad un estímulo para continuar trabajando y perseverar!

Kakaw is a typographic project created in collaboration with my sister Frida Larios and other American designers, Alexis Diezcabezas ( Cuba ) and Miguel Hernández of Chilean type foundry Latinotype. The realization of this project has taken several years, I take the opportunity to tell you a little about its history :
The concept of the letter was born years ago in 2004 with the development of my final Bachelor thesis project and the typographic development of logo and brand for the revival of indigo, blue natural dye part of the colonial history of El Salvador. This logotype and its typography cement the shape and style for the regular version of the whole alphabet created by Alexis and used for corporate communications of the branding and packaging design studio run by my sister Frida and me from years 2001 to 2007. Since then Frida uses the type for various applications in her lifelong project of The New Maya Language, which was also published in the book (see image below).
Over a year ago the project revives with the development of the light version of the typeface by Miguel Hernández and the creation of accompanying Dingbats characters created by Frida and me.
This year, Kakaw, (meaning of ' chocolate ' in Maya language) as we decided to name the font, and their playful Dingbats have recently been published in the book ' The Field Guide to Typography ' by Peter Dawson and the renowned publisher Thames & Hudson. (See images above). Last week I had the opportunity to attend the book launch in London at Gallery Anise . Thank you very much to Peter Dawson for the invitation, for recognising and believing in our work. As you can see this project would not have been possible without the collaboration of several creative minds and hands. Thank you all!

Kakaw es un proyecto tipográfico creado en colaboración con mi hermana Frida Larios y otros diseñadores latinoamericanos, Alexis Diezcabezas (Cuba) y Miguel Hernández de la casa tipográfica chilena Latinotype. La realización de este proyecto ha llevado varios años, les cuento un poco de su historia: 
El concepto de la letra surge años atrás en el año 2004 con el desarrollo de mi proyecto final de tesis de Licenciatura y el desarrollo tipográfico de logotipo y marca para el resurgimiento del índigo, colorante natural azul que forma parte de la historia colonial de El Salvador. Este logo y su tipografía cimentan la forma y el estilo para el desarrollo de la versión regular del alfabeto completo creado por Alexis y utilizado para las comunicaciones corporativas del estudio de diseño especializado en marcas y empaques que dirigimos mi hermana Frida y yo desde el año 2001 al 2007. Desde entonces Frida utiliza la tipografía para diversas aplicaciones en su proyecto de vida de El Nuevo Lenguaje Maya, el cual también fue publicado en el libro (ver imagen abajo). 
Hace más de un año el proyecto resurge con el desarrollo de la versión light de la tipografía por parte de Miguel Hernández y la creación de Dingbats que acompañan la letra creados por Frida y yo. 
Este año, Kakaw, (significado de 'chocolate' en lenguaje Maya), como decidimos nombrar a la fuente, y sus juguetones Dingbats han aparecido recientemente publicados en el libro 'The Field Guide to Typography' por Peter Dawson y la reconocida editorial Thames & Hudson. (Ver fotos arriba). La semana anterior tuve la oportunidad de asistir al lanzamiento del libro en Londres en la Galería Anise. Muchas gracias a Peter Dawson por la invitación, por reconocer y creer en nuestro trabajo. Como pueden ver este proyecto no hubiera sido posible sin la colaboración de varias mentes y manos creativas. ¡Gracias a todos!

Work/Life 3: Climbing up the Hill

My copy of Work/Life 3 book has finally arrived! Wow so much inspiring work and interesting stories to read! Published by the fantastic team of Uppercase Magazine, the book features the work and life of a selection of illustrators from around the world. Each artist was given a special assignment for the book and in my case the result was "Climbing up the Hill". A piece inspired not only by my love of cycling and of course patterns, but also inspired by my daughter Elena and my beloved country El Salvador, located in a volcanic and mountainous region, where I acquired my love of cycling. (I really miss the the hills, especially San Salvador's Volcano, which I used to climb up with my bike every week).
'Climbing up the Hill' with patience, determination and perseverance you somehow manage to reach the top of the climb and as always, it is followed by the reward, the way down, and suddenly all the effort seems worthwhile. Thank you Uppercase Magazine it was a real pleasure and honour to take part in such wonderful publication! Oh, and this piece will soon be taking part in an exhibition too, I will tell you more about this in another post...

Mi copia del libro Work/Life 3 llegó finalmente! Wow cuanto inspirador trabajo e interesantes historias para leer! Publicado por el fantástico grupo de la revista Canadiense Uppercase, el libro muestra el trabajo y vida de una selección de ilustradores de todo el mundo. A cada artista le fue dado un brief especial y en mi caso  el resultado fue "Subiendo la Montaña". Una pieza inspirada no sólo por mi amor por el ciclismo y por supuesto los patterns, sino también inspirada en mi hija Elena y mi amado país El Salvador, localizado en una región volcánica y sumamente montañosa, en donde adquirí mi amor por el ciclismo. (De verdad extraño las subidas, en especial el Volcán de San Salvador, el cual solía subir con mi bicicleta todas las semanas).  
'Subiendo la Montaña' con paciencia, determinación y perseverancia de alguna forma llegas a la cima y como siempre luego viene la recompensa, la bajada, y de repente todo el esfuerzo parece haber valido la pena.
Muchas gracias a la Revista Uppercase fue realmente un gran placer y honor el poder tomar parte de tan maravillosa publicación! Ah y esta pieza también estará formando parte de una exhibición muy pronto, les contaré más sobre ésto en otro post...
